Getting to Know Somatic Experiencing: Healing Through the Body

🌊 Have you ever noticed how your body tenses up when you’re stressed — maybe your shoulders creep toward your ears, or your stomach feels tight? That’s your nervous system doing its best to protect you. Somatic Experiencing (SE) is all about helping your body release that stored tension so you can feel calmer and more grounded.

🌊 Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE is a body-based approach to healing trauma and stress. Instead of focusing only on talking about what happened, it gently guides you to notice what’s happening inside your body right now — sensations, breath, muscle tension, even temperature changes. The idea is that trauma often gets “stuck” in the nervous system, and by paying attention in small, manageable ways, your body can complete the stress response and naturally move toward balance again.

🌊 In a session, you might work with a trained practitioner who helps you slow down and notice sensations safely. It’s not about reliving painful memories, but about reconnecting with your body’s natural rhythms and resilience. Many people describe feeling more relaxed, present, and alive after just a few sessions.

🌊 Somatic Experiencing isn’t about fixing what’s “wrong” with you — it’s about helping your body remember how to feel safe. If you’ve tried talk therapy but feel like something’s missing, SE can be a beautiful way to bring your body into the healing process.
